Mount Pinatubo, Philippines

Mount Pinatubo, Philippines

Mount Pinatubo is located on the Luzon Island, Philippines and is an active stratovolcano.  It was once covered with thick dense forest and supported a large population of several thousand of people until the eruption in 1991 resulted in massive destruction. Several surrounding cities were affected with streams of pyroclastic flow and millions of sulphur dioxide was released that caused ozone depletion.

The eruption had an adverse effect on the environment, since the eruption, the rain brought lahars from the mountain range and significant quantity of ash that was ejected, added aerosols and dust into stratosphere. The eruption also resulted in the formation of the lake called Lake Pinatubo.

The mountain consists of ten river system, which is highly polluted some of them are San Fernando and Santa Rita. The area has been suffering from ecological problem due to various human activities like deforestation resulting in flooding and siltation.

In spite of all these problems, it is still a famous destination for hiking. The Lake Pinatubo and caldera formed due to the eruption has become great tourist attraction and can be accesses from the route through Barangay Santa Juliana in Capas, Tarlac.
