Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, Philippines

Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Cebu town, Philippines. It covers 1,030 hectares of the Olango Island, consisting of sand flats, offshore coral reefs, and mangroves. The sanctuary aims to protect 97 species of bird in Olango out of which 48 are migratory. Olango is the first wetland of Philippines that is of international importance for waterfowl.

This wetland provides an ideal habitat for the water birds, frogs, invertebrates as well as sea grass and mangrove forests. In addition to this, one more advantage is that it prevents flooding as it holds water like sponge and keeps water level of the river normal.

Approximately 10,000 migratory birds were documented in 1987 in the Olango Island.  Around the year 1992, it was declared as a protected area. Species like Chinese Egret and Dowitcher are the threatened species in the sanctuary. During the bird migration from November to February, about 40,000 migratory birds visit Olango.  Recorded bird species that can be observed are Terek Sandpiper, Grey tailed Tattler, Whiskered Tern, Common Kingfisher, Barn Swallor, Pacific Swala ,Gull Billed Tern and many more species making it an ideal place for bird watching.
