Nyungwe Forest, Rawanda

Nyungwe Forest lies in the southwestern Part of Rewanda and is bordered with Burundi and Lake Kivu. It is the best rainforest that is well maintained and preserved throughout Central Africa. Nyungwe National Park was established in 2004 and covers 970 square kilometers of rainforest that includes bamboo, grassland, bogs and swamps. It is house to more than 200 different types of trees and myriad of flowering plants.

The park contains 275 species of birds, 85 mammal species, 38 reptile species and 1068 plant species. Many of these animals are found in specific ranges that are restricted to the area in Albertine Rift montane forests in Africa. Various trails lead through Nyungwe forest to several waterfalls and viewing points. The ornithological site in Rawanda, Nyungwe Forest consists of 300 bird species out of which two dozen are found only in montane forests on the Albertine Rift. The forest’s National park namely Nyungwe National Park includes a significant bird that is rare to be found, which is the great blue Turaco. The forest consisted of colonies of chimpanzees and Angola Colobus that later became extinct in Angola due to intense hunting.
