Kibira National Park

Kibira National Park

Situated at the top of Congo-Nile ranges, between 1500 and 2660m of altitude, Kibira Park is a rainy forest covering 40,000 hectares. Originally, it was the sacred hunting reserve for the kings of Burundi. The sacred character of the forest, which owes its pristine nature to the colonial era, helped to conserve it. Later, between 1933 and 1980, Kibira was classified as the Congo- Nile Ridge Forests Reserve.

Currently, the park is a protected area and it inhabits about 98 mammal species, numerous families of chimpanzees, baboons, tailed monkeys, and black colobus. It also has some 200 species of birds, some of which include the Great Blue Turaco, Mountain Buzzard, White-spotted Flufftail, Grey Parrot, Bar-tailed Trogon, and the Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill.

Numerous streams and rivers that irrigate the country in the east as well as in the west have their sources in this park. The rainy forest of the land plays a prominent role for the formation of the basins of Congo and Nile rivers. Tourists can go deep in the dark undergrowth to discover the charms of the primeval forest, with amazing melodies of birdsall along the way. You can pass through huge tea plantations of Teza and Rwegura that further constitute charming attractions.
