Golden Gate Bridge, California, USA

Life is such a precious gift from God that most of the people would not want to lose. Yet few people often feel driven by negative thoughts. Such individuals probably immerse their existence in a world of darkness and forget to appreciate this lovely life. Some of these individuals take the harshest step of ending their lives by committing suicide. It is such a terrible tragedy happening to anybody. However, these people have unfortunately turned some of the beautiful spots in the world into famous suicide points. It is difficult to imagine their trauma, but here is a look at some places that have become notorious points due to their final acts.

San Diego-Coronado Bridge, California, USA

The 200-foot Coronado Bridge looks stunning with its beautiful arches that glow at night. Yet, some people with suicidal tendencies took advantage of this height and leapt over it. Between the years 1972 and 2000, more than 200 individuals ended up their frustration from life at this point, making it a famous suicide place. To discourage suicide at this point, various signs have been placed that could motivate people to return or to call a helpline. Some psychologists believe that people find such beautiful places quite fantasizing to have an experience of a jump. It is a way to get back to their mother’s womb when they jump into the ocean waters. Even though they do not think of the consequences while taking a leap, the end is ultimately agonizing for them.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Can you believe that such a breathtaking destination witnesses the suicide of about 20-25 people every year? Yes, such is the sad story behind these lovely waters. Between the years 1856 and 1995, this suicide point has seen around 2,780 suicide deaths. Once again, psychologists suggest that these people, who dare to commit suicide, like to end their lives at significant places. At important places, they wish to feel some kind of a collective connection with humankind before they finally choose to give away their life. Some experts believe that if people are prevented from committing suicide at these places, they generally do not turn back again to try it.

George Washington Memorial Bridge, Washington, USA

Also called Aurora Bridge, the George Washington Memorial Bridge is a highway link between Mexico and Canada. This place has a negative image because of the number of suicides that took place here. A major reason contributing to these suicides might be the easy access this bridge offers pedestrians. The bridge was opened for public in 1932, but a suicide took place even before its construction was completed. Since the time it has opened, this point has seen around 230 suicides. To reduce death rates at this point, many emergency phones were installed. There were various signs placed. The bridge even has a barrier erected now. It is hoped that this bridge gets to correct its image as a beautiful suicide point.

Golden Gate Bridge, California, USA

Golden Gate Bridge, California, USA

This beautiful bridge has sadly witnessed many people losing their own lives. There have been 1,550 known suicide cases since its opening in 1937. In fact, it is considered as the world’s most popular suicide spot. There have been many people who were taken off the bridge while they were trying to commit suicides. The coastguards also rescued some after they had jumped off the bridge. It is believed that the Golden Gate Bridge should have more protection. Additional suicide prevention efforts are required at this happening suicidal point.

Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, Jiangsu, China

This 130-foot bridge was the first heavy bridge that was purely designed and built in-house. Now, it has a shadowed reputation for being a common suicide point. The horrible part is that around 2,000 people committed suicides at this point during its construction period only. Currently, it is counted as one of the world’s most notorious suicide points. Since the Chinese government does not want to acknowledge suicide as a problem within the country, there are hardly any efforts done to reduce the death rate at this bridge point. In fact, the high death rate at this bridge has inspired an adjoining bridge (Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge) to become another famous suicide spot.

Beachy Head, East Sussex, England

This beautiful white cliff is also a soft target for people aiming to commit suicides. Around 20 people end their lives every year at this point. They jump either into the water or onto the side rocks. However, various efforts have been done to curb the death rate at Beachy Head. All around, the signs are placed for encouraging people to call up at the given phone numbers. In addition, a suicide phone booth has been installed that also motivates people to call at the helpline numbers. A charity team that helps suicidal people also patrols the area.
