MorneTrois Pitons National Park

MorneTrois Pitons National Park

Located in the Caribbean island of Dominica, the MorneTrois Pitons National Park is a World Heritage Site since 1997. It includes and protects some of the clear streams, mountains and some of the tropical virgin forest for their educational, scientific, and scenic values.

The MorneTrois Pitons National Park was first proposed as a forest reserve in 1952. The area was established as a national park by the Dominican government in July 1975. The park named after its highest mountain, MorneTrois Pitons, meaning mountain of three peaks. Surrounded by mountains, the park is a significant area of volcanic activity.

Major features within the park include the Valley of Desolation that comprises more than fifty fumaroles and hot springs, indicating that rocks of high temperature exist near the surface. Additionally, the park holds Boiling Lake, which is the worlds’ second largest of its kind. Boiling Lake is surrounded by cliffs and is almost covered by clouds of steam.
