Mexico is the tenth most-visited tourist destination in the world and the first destination for American tourists. The duality of modernism and history is demonstrated in Mexico as the temples and cathedrals contrast with futuristic buildings and fully-equipped beach resorts. Elsewhere, elements of the ancient and colonial cultures persist in aspects of rural life. The diversity in Mexico offers some exciting tourist destinations to travellers from around the world.
Location
Located in southern part of North America, Mexico, rich in ancient civilizations, is also a modern developing nation. There are 31 states in the country, each having numerous travelling destinations of international importance. Mexico has three major cities which have emerged centre of trade and commerce including Toluca, Greater Mexico City and Puebla.
Events
Fêtes and festivals are celebrated with enthusiasm, and the markets in towns and villages are lively. From the soccer games to the religious festivals, the passionate Mexicans always ensure participation and enjoyment.
Sites to See
The most notable attractions are the Meso-American ruins, colonial cities and especially the beach resorts. The nation’s temperate climate and unique culture – a fusion of the European, particularly Spanish and the Meso-American, also make Mexico an attractive destination.
Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and is popular with tourists as an ancient Meso-American city and the site of many popular tourist attractions such as the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Other human-made tourist zones, like the La Zona Rosa or Shopping District, El Palenque and El Zócalo, one of the largest public plazas in the world, are located here.
The city is also home to the Plaza de toros México – the world’s largest bullring and to the Mexican National Palace, built on the site of Montezuma’s palace and the huge Metropolitan Cathedral, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, built over the even greater Temple of Teocalli. Mexico City features also one of the finest museums in the world: the National Museum of Anthropology and History.
Guadalajara, Jalisco, the second-largest city by population in the Republic, is home of some of Mexico’s best known traditions, like tequila, mariachi music and charros, or Mexican cowboys. Its similitude with western European countries mixed with modern architecture and infrastructure makes Guadalajara very attractive to tourists
Mexico offers innumerable riches for tourism, but beyond the beaches, the archeological sites and the ecotourism, there’s the cuisine which is providing magnificent opportunities for visitors.
Language
Spanish is the de facto language spoken by the vast majority of Mexicans, though it is not an official language. The non-indigenous languages spoken in Mexico include English (by English-speaking immigrants and by the residents of border states as well).
Weather
The climate varies according to altitude and rainfall. Mexico City and most of the other important population centres are in the cool zone, with a mean annual temperature of 17° C. The highest mountain peaks are always covered with snow. Most of Mexico is deficient in rainfall. The northern states are semi-desert or desert. Most of the country receives heavy rainfall during the summer months.
