Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Located in Khentii Mountains about 70km towards northeast of Ulaanbaatar, the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is an ideal destination for people who intend to get a short tour. Terelj was initially developed for tourism in 1964 and 30 years later, it became a part of the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. Most of its parts consist of steep, wooded mountains and dramatic rock formations. The destination is popular among both tourists and locals for horseback riding, hill climbing, fishing, and photography.

It includes a number of viewpoints where visitors can enjoy sightseeing and relax. You can see over 250 species of birds in the park along with animals like elk, moose, and bear. Numerous activities are offered by the park for visitors, such as rafting, trekking, and camping. Many rock formations for rock climbers are there in the area, out of which most famous are Turtle Rock or Melkhi Khad, which is an interesting rock formation looking like a turtle, and Praying Lama Rock that looks like an old man reading a book. It is easily accessible by foot, on horseback, or you can take a bus from Ulaanbaatar to the park.
