Minkebe National Park

Located at the extreme end of northeastern parts of Gabon, Minkebe National Park was established in 2000 as a provisional reserve that covers an area of 7,570 square kilometers. The site was established as a provisional reserve in 2000 and was officially recognized and established by the Gabonese government in August 2002. The WWF marked the Minkebe National Park as protection required area way back in 1989 and has been working for its safety since 1997.

The national park features a wide diversity of habitats, lush green forests, swamps, four main rivers, grasslands and so on. The area is famous for its largest population of forest elephants in Africa. Other animals that occupy the area include mandrill, black colobus, chimpanzee, elephants, gorillas, porcupines, squirrels, African golden cats, red river hog, leopards, giant pangolins, duikers and many more. Rare animal include the Giant forest Hog and Bongo.

The Park is recognized by IUCN as a critical site for conservation and this area has been proposed as a World Heritage Site. Loaded with incredible natural beauty and several animal species, Minkebe National Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Gabon.
