Garamba National Park, Montserrat

Garamba National Park, Montserrat

Garamba National Park is located in the province of Congo in Africa and was established in 1938. It is home to the world’s largest population of Northern White Rhinoceros and was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In 1960, a domestic program was started for the preservation of African Elephants.

The vegetation comprises of woodland and savannas and marshlands depression. The UNESCO, Frankfurt Zoological society and World Wildlife Fund together worked with the Zairian government to rehabilitate the park. It was listed under World Heritage Site Danger List in 2004 as African Buffalo, Elephants and white Rhinos fell into the hand of poachers. Hence, the population of the elephants in the park had fallen by 90% and in 2012 many elephants became witness to attack by the poachers for tusks. Currently, 68 elephants were killed including young ones hacking of their tusks. It is being predicted that the northern white rhinos will soon become extinct due to continuous attack by the poachers. Several plans were proposed by the government for the shifting of animals to Kenya but had not been implemented.
