Orana Wildlife Park

Orana Wildlife Park

Orana Wildlife Park that covers an area of 80 hectares is located in close proximity to the Christchurch International Airport. Its status of being the only open range zoo in New Zealand makes it one of the most-visited tourist attractions. Opened in 1976, the park is operated by a registered charity, known as the Orana Wildlife Trust.

The park is an open range sanctuary that aims to protect endangered animal species. Orana wildlife park is internationally recognized for its involvement in captive breeding programs for endangered exotic animals, as well as New Zealand’s own rare fauna. It provides these animals an environment as their natural habitats. Visitors can find over 400 animals of different species in the park. The park offers a great opportunity to hand feed giraffe, meet rhino up close, and watch tigers search for food. Additional species that visitors can see in the park are monkeys, meerkats, kiwi, and reptiles. People can get a chance to travel through the lion habitat, interact with cheetah, or feed a lemur.

During the guided visit, daily and scheduled animal feeds occur regularly throughout the day, which offers visitors a chance to get close to animals. Further, the park offers visitors a café and a wildlife gift shop on-site.
