Do’s and don’ts of driving in Iceland

It is never easy to drive in a land where you don’t live, especially if the driving rules are different. It takes exceptional driving skills to drive in an uneven foreign road where you have never been. Driving in rocky mountain roads or frozen roads can be really tricky. Some people go on adventure trips in Iceland and drive cars too. Iceland has many spots blessed with nature’s scenic beauty but to enjoy them alone or with your group you have to take the right measures while hiring or driving a car. Think about the scenario that you have got stuck in the icy mud of Iceland, and can do nothing about it. May be you will have to wait on the streets for hours before you see another car. The following tips will help you with a safe ride in Iceland.

 

Do’s

Get full information:

When you are hiring a car then make sure that the car rental company is well reputed and trustworthy. The worst thing that can happen with you is a breakdown in the middle of your journey. Information is power. Rent a hardy and strong car and demand to see the appropriate documents. Make sure that the car rent company provides some help in emergency conditions. For example if there is a problem with the car you must get a replacement.

Know the basics:

Cars are driven at the right side of the roads in Iceland. There are many roads you will encounter that have only a gravel surface. Country roads are narrow and you must be a good driver to tackle such roads. Keep your seat belts on and check if the car has proper headlights.

Don’ts

Speed limitations:

Don’t think that you can drive at any speed just because you are at a foreign land. Iceland has strict rules for driving speeds. The highest speed you can drive in is 90kmph on the hard surfaced roads and 50kmph while inside the cities and towns. Breaking traffic rules will be countered by hard penalties.

Safety rules:

Using cell phones while driving is prohibited and you have to keep the headlights turned on and the seat belts fastened. Apart from following the basic rules keep long rope in your car so you can pull it out from soft ice mud if necessary. Keep on the gravel roads. Do not drink while driving.
