Ban Mini Buses in Kolkata

The West Bengal government should ban minibuses that ply across the city with immediate effect. These buses are of no actual help when it comes to carrying maximum number of passengers. The seats of these buses are uncomfortable in every way and becomes claustrophobic for many people, especially for the senior citizens. The capacity for carrying passengers is numbered and hence, it becomes unbearable to sit and stand properly in these minibuses during the sweltering summer months. Women commuting in these buses face extreme problem standing or sitting properly due to rash driving and lack of enough space inside.

Rash driving is synonymous with Kolkata transport and minibuses are infamous for rash driving and breaking all traffic rules. Most accidents and near accidental conditions happen with minibuses overtaking each other and crossing speed limits. Minibuses also contribute largely to the city’s high levels of air pollution. It is high time the government comes up with a ban on these minibuses and replace them with a fleet of Volvo and other new age buses. Not only are these buses comfortable, spacious and modern, they are less prone to accidents and other mishaps on road.
