New England/Acadian Forests, Canada

Acadian Forests, Canada

New England/Acadian Forests are located in United States and Canada, are a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest eco region.  The region includes Beauce regions and the Eastern Townships, northern Appalachian Mountains, Saint John River valley and highlands of Nova Scotia Peninsula.

The climate prevailing in the region consists of warm summers and cold snowy winters along the Atlantic Ocean that brings rains in the region all around the year. The lower region of the Forests called as seaboard lowlands extend to the mid-coastal Maine, and influences the region with a more mid climate. Much of the flora had been cleared by 19th century, but was later renewed.

The habitat of the area is largely influenced by micro climatic conditions. The species of forest that shows a great diversity across the region are the alpine communities on the highest mountains, northern hardwood forests, and coniferous forest. The transition of the forests of New England Forests from Great Lakes region to the west are distinguished by a canopy of red spruce and red pine.

It is home to various species of wildlife like American black bear, white tailed deer, moose, Otter, wild turkey, raccoon, bobcat, fisher, and Passerines.  The region has been greatly altered due to activities like agriculture, urban development, and mining. Currently only five percent of the forest is in its natural state.

The national parks helping in the preservation of the forests are the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Tobeatic Game Reserve and Bic National Park.
