Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea

Milne Bay is located in the Milne Bay province at the southeastern of Papua New Guinea, named after Sir Alexander Milne. It is more than 35 Kilometers long and over 15 kilometers wide. It is deep sheltered deep-water harbor, which is enclosed by heavily wooded Stirling Range from north to south. To the northern shore lies a narrow coastal strip, soggy with sago and mangrove swamps. It consists of about 160 named islands and atolls scattered over 250,000 square kilometers of ocean and 500 cays.

It is a famous site known for the Battle of Milne Bay during World War II in 1942 and become a major support base for the New Guinea campaign through the development of Finschhafen who made it an advanced base that was later secured as an area in the Huon Peninsula campaign. About 140 vessels were present in the harbor due to congestion at the facilities. Many improvements were made in the Milne bay and the congestion was relieved with the opening of a port at Finschhafen. Thousands of visitors come here to enjoy diving and seeing the remains that depict the historical evidence of the Milne War.
