Jotunheimen National Park, Norway

Located in Norway, Jotunheimen National Park is considered as the one of the main regions for hiking and fishing in Norway. The total area covered by the park is 1,151 square kilometers. The park consists of 250 peaks, which rise above 1,900 meters  and also includes Northern Europe’s two highest peak namely Glittertind at 2,465 meters and Galdopiggen at a elevation of 2,469 meters.

It covers most of the mountainous areas of Jotunheimen and geographically lays in the Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane counties. The park comprises of large varieties of flora and fauna in spite of long and cold winters and endless mid summer nights. The vegetation cover is mainly made of Norwegian alpine plants along with glacier buttercup that growing at the 100m below the summit of high Glittertind.

Purple saxifrage and rose root are found at an elevation of 2300 meters.  About 75 species of birds live in the park. Woodpeckers, golden eagle and gerfalcon are spotted on Northern Europe’s highest mountain.  Animals such as reindeer, deer, roe, fox, marten, mink, wolverines and lynx can be seen roaming in the park. It also serves as a historical site as remains of Stone Age can be observed in the park area.
