Galapagos National Park, Ecuador

Galapagos National Park, Ecuador

Galapagos National Park was established in 1959 and is located in Puerto Ayora, Ecuador. 97% of the land area of Galapagos Islands has been designated as first national park of Ecuador. The three percent land that is left is distributed among the areas of Floreana, Isabela, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal.

It consists of Itabaca Channel that is located between the two islands namely the Galapagos and Ecuador. UNESCO declared this park as a World Heritage Site in 1979. However in 2007 due to industrialization and uncontrolled migration UNESCO added Galapagos National Park under the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. It is home to more than 1,900 of its 5,000 unique species that are found nowhere else in the world. Tortuga Bay in the Galapagos is the favorite visiting spot located on the Santa Cruz Island. Marine iguanas, birds and Galapagos crabs can be spotted near the lava rocks in Tostuga Bay. A separate cove is also present where swimming can be done and white tip reef sharks, small fish, Galapagos tortoise and birds can be seen.
