Funafuti, Tuvalu

Funafuti is the capital of Tuvalu and atoll consisting of population 6,194 people, which makes the most populated atoll and. It is 14 Kilometer wide and is surrounded with a lagoon 18 kilometer in length. Fongafale is the largest of the islets of Funafuti. It comprises of four villages and is a meeting place for several communities. The famous building of the Funafuti atoll is the church of Tuvalu also called as Fetu Ao Lima. It also has another eye catching site such as the left over remains of the Japanese aircraft that crashed during World War II and the site is currently used as Funafuti International Airport.

Funafuti Marine Conservation Area was established in June 1996 near the western comprising of six islets. The total area that comes under Funafuti conservation is 33 kilometer square and consists of 0.08 kilometer square of six islets. The area is accessible only through boat across the lagoon from Fongafale. There are 29 islets in the Funafuti and the biggest is Fongafale.
