Darién National Park

Darién National Park

Located in southern parts of Panama in Darien province, Darién National Park is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the country. It is situated around 325 kilometers from Panama City. The total area covered under the park is approximately 5,790 square kilometers. It is the largest protected area in Central America. Established in September 27, 1980, the park is incorporated by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site since 1981 and is declared as a Biosphere Reserve.

The National Park provides shelter to numerous endemic species, which are on the IUCN Red List, such as American Crocodile and the Capybara, Spotted Paca, Guatemalan Black Howler, Central American Agouti, Night Monkey, Black-headed Spider Monkey, etc . Commonly found species include parrot, tapirs, macaw, harpy eagle, etc. The park includes more than seven species of mammals, such as the giant pocket gopher, the fox, etc. Over 450 bird species, which include treerunner, the green-naped tanager, etc.

The National Institute of Natural Renewable Resources is responsible for the management and control of the national park. Every year thousands of tourists visit the Darién National Park and explore the natural beauty of the region.
