Church of Our Lady (Fraumunster)

Church of Our Lady (Fraumunster)

Situated next to the Zurich Lake, the Church of Our Lady was founded in 853 by King Louis the German. Initially, the female members of the aristocracy of Europe inhabited the church with its convent. Around the 13th century, the convent enjoyed the patronage of kings and the right to mint coins in Zurich. However, after the reformation, the ownership of the church and convent passed to the city of Zurich.

Currently, the church is one of the main churches of the city. Fraumunster has an elegant blue spire, which soars above the Zurich skyline. The architectural features of the church include the famous stained-glass windows of 1967 by the famous artist Marc Chagall. The three main windows include the blue Jacob window, with a ladder to heaven, the green Christ window, featuring Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, and the yellow Zion window, depicting King David and Bathsheba. There are windows to its sides, portraying the Prophets and Moses. Visitors can access the church very easily, as its blue spire rises into the skyline of Zurich. Those who intend to visit Fraumunster are supposed to walk along the Limmat River to reach the church.
