Akanda National Park

Akanda National Park

Located in the northeastern parts of Gabon, Akanda National Park lies near Libreville beside the coastline of Mondah and Corisco bays. It is one of the 13 national parks in the country set up by President Omar Bongo after a two years study conducted by the WWF, WCS and DFC. Established in 2002, the park covers a total area of 540 square kilometers.

Main aim behind creating the national park is to encourage tourism in the country and to represent country’s biodiversity. The site features mangrove and tidal coastline habitats. The country has 2.5% of the total mangrove swamp in Africa. These mangroves play very significant role in the ecosystem, particularly help in stabilizing the coastline around Libreville.

IUCN has marked the Akanda National Park amongst the critical sites in the country. It has rich flora and fauna. Main attraction is the Corisco bay, which serves as an important feeding ground for turtles. Beautiful surroundings as rich biodiversity make this park tourist hotspot for nature and animal lovers.
