Tips for air traveling with your guns

The norms regarding flying with guns are very strict. The aviation industry, national governments and international laws have made flying with one or more guns quite impossible. Many people like to enjoy shooting on their vacations. If you are truly passionate about shooting, then you should know the rules of flying with guns to avoid unnecessary complications. The norms for traveling within your country with guns are different from traveling internationally.

The right information and knowledge will prove to be your best buddies in this matter. Some travel destinations allow shotguns and highly powerful guns but others do not. Inquire about the custom rules at your destination and keep the relevant documents with you at all times. You may have to get a permit for traveling with high-powered guns. Following are some steps that you must follow for safely traveling with your guns.

Invest in a case for the guns:

Buy a tough and sturdy case for your gun. The airline customs officers will not handle your guns tenderly. It is always better to be safe than sorry. For bigger guns, you will need to buy gun cases with a thick foam lining. You have to cut this inner lining according to the size and shape of your gun. Pelican shaped cases and golf cases are often used to carry gun without drawing unwanted attention. You can carry small pistols in your normal luggage. You should remove the scope of your rifle before packing it, and if you are traveling with an AR-15 you must first be sure to know the laws of the state you are travelling to, and it is a good idea to separate the 80 percent lower from the upper assembly.

Go to the baggage check-in:

Be honest and upfront and go to the baggage counter directly after entering the airport. Tell the customs attendant that you are carrying one or more guns in your luggage. Get it checked and show the necessary documents to avoid unnecessary delays. You have to provide a written declaration that the guns you are carrying are not loaded. You may be asked the reason of carrying guns. After the inspection of your guns is complete, lock the gun case for safety.
