Zakouma National Park, Chad

Zakouma National Park, Chad

Zokuma National Park is located between Am Timan and Sarh lying in the southern part of Chad. It was the first national park in Chad and was established in 1963. The total area covered by it is about 3,000 square Kilometers and is completely surrounded by Bahr Salamat Funal Reserve. In 1989, the European Union started a restoration program for Zakouma. There has been decrease in the number of animal species in and around the park such as elephants, whose estimated population in 1970 was about 300,000 but by 2007 the elephant number declined to 10,000. In spite of government laying down several norms for the protection of the African Elephant, poaching still continues thereby resulting in the threatening of their lives.

The park is considered as the center where herds of elephant can be found because of the fertile land and safeguards planned by the government. The fauna of the park includes 44 species of large mammals and several other species of birds. The population of the lions in 2005 was about 120 while the elephant’s number was 3,885.
