What not to do when you are in an Islamic country

Islamic countries especially those located in Middle East and Southern Asia are the most sought after tourist destinations that see millions of tourists flocking in from different countries throughout the year. Tourism industry in these countries is one of the main revenue earners with many travel agencies coming up with attractive tour packages providing additional attraction to visit these countries.  The hospitality and generosity of Islamic people are well recognized, and in return some courteous gestures and behavior are expected from the tourists. Muslims like any other ethnic class take pride in their cultural heritage and adhere to certain traditional customs strictly. It is better to get educated about a few of these things before visiting any Islamic country so as not to hurt the local sentiment.

 

While visiting an Islamic country, take care you follow the tips to ensure an enjoyable vacation. Follow the adage, “Be Roman while in Rome”.

 

Do not talk loudly or show any rude behavior even if you are upset due to a valid reason. This is bound to create a negative impression on Muslims and you will not receive further cooperation from them.

 

Community dining is widely practiced in Islamic countries especially those located in Middle East. Do not eat with your left hand as it is considered as an unhygienic way of eating. Do not leave your plate clean after eating. Leave a small quantity of food on your plate to show that you had enjoyed enough.  Eating pork is strictly prohibited in Islamic culture. Never ask for pork dishes either in a restaurant or in a guest’s place.

 

Never ask for hard drinks or smoke in any gathering as Muslims strictly condemn these vices. Though some hotels serve drinks, avoid asking for drinks when you are in a gathering or visiting a Muslim guest. If you visit during Ramadan month, avoid smoking and drinking in public places strictly as Muslims refrain from these activities during this period.

 

Women should not enter the mosques or shrines with uncovered heads. Nobody will force you to wear burqha, but you should cover your head with a special scarf available in the mosques. Wearing shorts and sleeveless dresses while visiting a mosque should be strictly avoided both by men and women.

 

Shaking hands is not universally accepted in an Islamic country. Many Muslim women are not used to this gesture. Though some Muslim men shake hands readily, many may not accept this Western etiquette in a good humor.

 

Avoid wearing revealing dresses. Muslims prefer modest dressing. Wear casual and formal wear while going out for site seeing.

Do not show your soles to anybody as this considered as a bad gesture. Avoid pointing your finger to anybody while talking.

 

Muslims do not encourage outward exhibition of love. Avoid walking down the road holding your partner’s hand. Hugging and kissing in public are considered undesirable acts.
