Train Accident Suspends Railway Traffic in Sindh

A collision between two goods-carrying trains near the Kotri Railway Crossing (Sindh) resulted in a major railway traffic jam on Thursday, September 10, 2009. The accident took place at around 1:30 pm when a goods train coming from Karachi ran into another goods train that was at a halt on the same track, causing the derailment of as many as 18 tankers of crude oil.

The accident left the derailed train’s driver injured along with a helper, not to mention the disruption in the train schedules across the country. Leakage of a large quantity of crude oil from the tankers was also reported from the site of the accident. The leakage was stopped by police and railway. While the total damage caused by the accident has not been precisely determined, the accident itself is said to have revealed the slackness of the railway department.
