Sepik river, Papua New Guinea

Sepik River was named after a German Empress and is the longest river of Papua New Guinea. It has the total length of 1,126 km consisting of a drainage basin that spreads over 80,000 square kilometers. The river flows through the areas of Papua New Guinea provinces of East Sepik and Sandaun and a small section flowing through the Indonesian province of Papua. The Sepik River has a large catchment area that comprises of tropical rainforest, swamplands and mountains. The river is considered to have the largest uncontaminated freshwater wetland system in the Asia-Pacific region.

The river begins from the Victor Emanuel Range in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea. Various tributaries join on its way from Bewani and Toriricelli Mountains to the central range to the south and north. The Sepik Rivers flows in the curved fashion same as Amazon River to the Bismarck Sea. It has no delta unlike other rivers and hence directly flows into the sea that is about 100km to the east of town of Wewak. The tribe settlement along the river is known for their magnificent artworks that includes mainly clay pottery.
