Nanumea Atoll, Tuvalu

Nanumea Atoll also called Polynesian Triangle is a group of 9 tolls that collectively make Atoll located in Tuvalu is about 600 kilometers from Pacific Ocean near to the point where intersection of International Date line and Equator. Apart from being an atoll, it also includes a series of islets lying on the coral reef that are surrounded by a lagoon.

It is 12 kilometers in length and 2.5 kilometers wide with dry land area, that occupies 3.9square kilometers. The Conservation Area of the central lagoon covers 2 square Kilometers and 10% of the reef area comprising of marine habitats and two islets. About 664 population lives in the northwest side of the five islets of which the two largest islets cover about 90% of the dry area and the three smaller islets namely Te Afua-a-Taepoa, Motu Foiliki and Lafogaki spread over reef flat. The atoll has a pond, which is a unique feature, which usually is not common for atolls.

The island is accessible or reachable only through government supply ship. During World War II, it suffered several Japanese attacks.
