Kaieteur National Park, Guyana

Kaieteur National Park, Guyana

Located in the Potaro-Siparuni region of Guyana, the Kaieteur National Park was the first protected area in the country and one of the first protected areas in the South American continent. The park was established way back in the year 1929 by the British administration who were captivated by the area’s natural splendor, which included the Kaieteur falls.

The Kaieteur National Park occupies a prominent area in the center of the Guiana Shield, which is one of the oldest surfaces of our planet. The geological formation of the area is around 2 billion years old, and is hence of the time when our planet was taking shape and changing in ecology to support life. One of the most distinct features of the shield are its table-top mountains that are actually remnants of sandstone sediments that suffered erosion for hundreds of millions of years.

The Kaieteur Falls, which is one of the best features of the national park, sees water drop over a height of 226 meters, making its thunder being heard by visitors much before they see the cascade. A total of 136,200 liters of water hit the bottom of the rocky gorge every second, which creates an admirable spectacle for visitors to enjoy.
