Huka Falls

Huka Falls

Located on the Waikato River, Huka Falls is the largest fall near Taupo on the North New Zealand Island. It is one of the most visited natural attractions of the country. Etymologically speaking, the name Huka is a Maori word that stands for “foam”. Hence, it signifies falling water since it resembles foam, especially under flooding conditions.

At the Huka Falls, the Waikato River, which is normally 100m wide, is one of New Zealand’s longest rivers. The River drains to Lake Taupo, which is the largest freshwater lake in all of Australasia. Up to 220,000 liters of water per second shoots out over 8 meters beyond to create beautiful blue or green pool, and then rushes under a pedestrian bridge. Here visitors can get a great opportunity to take photographs from the bridge.

Further, people can take a 30-minute riverside walk to reach several viewing platforms available. Being close to Taupo, the Huka Falls is easily accessible. On the Huka Falls jet boat, you can have the best view of the base of the waterfall from the unique vintage point.
