Do’s and don’ts for female solo travelers

Traveling is a great way to refresh your mind, to learn new things and to gain many life-changing experiences. Nowadays, with the mode of transportation being cheaper and more convenient, many people including women venture out to see the world on their own. However, while traveling in a foreign country, safety always becomes the main concern especially if you are a woman. It is true that women always attract attention in foreign places whether they travel alone or in groups and so, it is very important for young women to know the basic techniques of keeping themselves safe in a foreign land. So, here are some basic do’s and don’ts for female travelers which will allow them to have a lot of fun while traveling and will also keep them safe:

Do’s

  1. Always keep multiple copies of the important documents like your passport, visa and health insurance card even if you are among those people who are very careful and seldom lose anything. Keep those copies in different places and also hand over one copy to your family.
  2. Stay in smaller hotels. Small hotels with less than 100 rooms always notices their guests especially if they are women. Their staff recognizes you easily and will also notice if anyone follows you although following someone in small hotel is very difficult.
  3. Stay in hotels where the electronic key services are provided. It is safer and more secure than the traditional locks and if you lose your electronic card somehow, then you are immediately provided with a new activated card by the hotel staff.

Don’ts

  1. Avoid using the maid service card because a maid service request card hanging on your front door will notify others that the room is empty. Burglars or stalkers may take advantage of this sign and break into your room while you are away and cause you a lot of trouble.
  2. Do not go to bars or pubs in a foreign city alone and never get drunk. Always bring your friends along with you whenever you go to a bar and try to remain sober as much as possible even when you are with friends.
  3. Avoid being careless. Thousands of thieves and muggers roam in the streets of big cities, especially if the city is a famous tourist destination. They can spot a careless person from a good distance and that’s when they target you. So, always be careful of your belongings and don’t be oblivious to your immediate surroundings.
