Balbalasang-Balbalan National Park, Philippines

Located in Kalinga, Philippines, Balbalasang-Balbalan National Park is also called “green heart of the cordillera.” The total area covered by the park is 1,338 hectares. It is placed under the Luzon Biogeographic region and is composed of two mountain ranges lying within the Cordillera Central region. The park consists of rich diversity of plants and animals along with great landscape views. The highest peak of the Phillippines, mount Sapocoy is located at the western boundary of the park. This mountain has an elevation of 2,456m.

The park hosts 89 bird species, 39 of which are endemic to Philippines, making it an important center for biodiversity conservation. None of the species of the park are endangered and four species of the bird have been categorized vulnerable.

Apart from the birds, 23 mammal species roam the park, giving company to 13 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 25 species of earthworms. Animals like Philippine wart pig, Luzon striped Rat, Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat, Kalinga, Luzon Narrow-mouthed frog, and Luzon Narrow-mouthed toad can be observed in the park. Rafflesia, the largest known flower in the world, is also known to boom in the Balbalasang National Park.

Activities like sight viewing can be done. Hiking, nature tours and trekking are offered by the park.
