How to deal with patients

The relationship between the patient and his care provider is laced with trust, responsibility and respect. Dealing properly with patients is as important as is the medical assistance provided thereof. Here are some easy ways that can help physicians deal agreeably with their patients.

Listen carefully not with ears alone but with eyes

The foremost responsibility is to identify the problem of patient that will help provide a solution to his/her ailment effectively. While talking to the patient, it is necessary to remain positive and attentive. This will confirm that they were heard well and you are willing to help them. Moreover, while listening to their version of difficulties keep eyes open to assess his/her situation. Sometimes, it may happen that, the patient is too frustrated with his situation and tend to say too less or too much than what is necessary. By being attentive to their signs of deterioration or improvement you can be more effective with the treatment than ever.

Keep your promises

Being nice, friendly and caring towards the patient is definitely good but while doing so be careful to maintain the ethics of the profession. Making promises which are difficult to fulfill will not only harm the trust factor but also make you look incompetent and callous. So while sympathizing with the patient and their families maintain eye contact and do not hesitate establishing the true limitations of your medications and/or the medical facilities. State the practical viewpoint, changes in the treatments, delays in the procedure and that what is achievable in the present scenario. Do not extend false hopes and insincere possibilities that mislead the family and causes further despair in future.

Inform, instruct and explain

Patients respond better to medicine and lab tests when they are aware of the procedures and backed with full knowledge of how, when and why. It is necessary for the doctor, nurse or care provider to discuss in detail about all the information necessary to understand the patients’ condition. He/she should be informed well about the cause, incidence and treatment of their ailment; followed by the basic instructions, explanations and directions thereof. This rules away uncertainty and unnecessary worries of the patient and makes him/her more cooperative and open to your advice and suggestions made in these conditions.
