6. Breaking Bad
The story of a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and turns to a life of crime, Breaking Bad breaks from the pack and gives us something riveting and new. This show deals with one mans battle against his own morality when he joins the drug world and how he handles the constant reminders that he is going to die, soon.
7. Boardwalk Empire
This show is set in the 20’s. Alcohol has been banned which led to bootleggers and smugglers rising up to fill the void. The storyline of Boardwalk Empire leaps from section to section, high paced, filled with action and the underground gangland activity that was so prevalent during the time. The exploration of criminal culture, and its relationship to political culture, make this show gripping throughout.
8. Sherlock
Some of you may not have heard of this one, but Sherlock is a gem of a show made by the BBC. Though it has been transplanted to modern day London it has kept the spirit of the books, and the casting is superb. This glorious updating is fast, smart, and riveting entertainment. One of the best TV shows to come out of the UK.
9. Suits
Set at the fictional law firm Pearson/Hardman in New York City, this remarkably engaging show has brought a sense of smarts and sophistication to the proceedings. With a great cast and an original take on the court room dramas, Suits is genuinely witty and engaging.
10. Homeland
If you like a bit of counter terrorism, mixed with gritty and engaging drama, Homeland is your show. Sophisticated, intelligent, complex, and rewarding, this show is fast paced and full of twists to keep you gripped until the end of the season.
