How to deal with despair

The feeling of despair arises when a certain situation is going absolutely in a wrong direction and you are filled with a sense of hopelessness, with the feeling that nothing will make the situation correct again. The sense of despair is common among individuals and having an idea on dealing with this feeling can help you overcome it easily.

Smile

When you are under despair, you tend to feel that this is the end of the world. However, in reality that is not so. To overcome this feeling of despair, try and smile. It may sound ridiculous, but a smile has far more healing effect than any other method of overcoming the feeling of despair. A recent research have shown that even a fake smile can produce endorphins, the feel good chemicals, which can go directly to your brain and stop it from getting more into the state of despair. Even if you do not feel like smiling, you should face a mirror and try to produce a fake smile for about five minutes. An easy way to produce a smile is to make faces. Seeing your own face in such a fashion in the mirror will surely make you laugh. If this does not evoke laughs from you, go outside and notice strangers on the road. You will surely find someone or something worth laughing at. Another way to combat despair is to join a laughing club, where you can join others for a laughing session. The systematic laughs that they evoke out from you may help you in getting rid of despair. A small smile from a child next door or your loved ones can also help you come out of your gloomy mood. Try talking to someone and ask them to smile at you.

Talk to someone

Talk with someone whom you trust. The person should be dependable and should not leak your thoughts or secrets which have led you into this situation of despair. The person with whom you will be sharing your thoughts of despair should be one who will not try to judge you, rather will lend an ear to your problems and try to get you out of this feeling. If the emotions within want to come out in the form of tears, let it come out. Keeping your emotions locked will only increase the wretched feeling, even more. A recent study has proved that tears help to relieve you from the depression chemicals produced by the brain. Crying is not a sign of weakness; rather it is a way of letting your mind to get relief of elements of despair. One may feel awkward initially, but the end result is rewarding. It lightens your mind and helps to get rid of despair. If things related to home have troubled you then try talking to your mother. She can be a very good listener. You can talk with your father and see how he judges the situation. Your parents would be good listeners and such people are those you want right now in this situation of yours.

Keep a journal

Maintaining a journal is an effective way of getting rid of despairing situations. If you do not have a trusted person with whom you can share your feelings, writing them in a journal can help you in allaying your despair. You can write about any situation, any feeling in the journal. It is a way of relieving your mind from the weight of the feeling of despair. You should empty your mind in the journal. The situation or the feeling should be written in all its blackness. You can also point out which part of the situation you could have controlled. Before ending the entry for the situation, write a thing which you really appreciate about yourself. This will be a good morale booster. Your diary or journal is a one way listener and you could scribble down any thoughts in it. In this way, all your despairing thoughts would get vented out and you would definitely feel better.

Do a good deed

However unrealistic it may sound, helping others is another way of getting over your despairing situation. When you have a feeling of despair, you feel as if you are the only person with such a huge problem on your mind. However, in such situations if you go out and try to help others, you will find many people with much more despairing situations. This will help you to forget your own problem. Try to get out of your egocentric world, where you feel that you are the only victim of woe. Helping others will make you more realistic and rational and you will understand that it is natural for individuals to face despair. Dealing with it and overcoming it proves the strength of the individual. You can start with your maid at home or some children in your locality. There are plenty of people around who need help. You can just go and talk to them sometimes, those people you know well. This would help you realize that there are more problems people face and its not just you.

Exercise

Nothing works better than exercise. A walk around your neighborhood or aerobics for about fifteen minutes can do wonders. These exercises stimulate the feel good chemicals in your brain and help you to get rid of the feelings of despair. Doing these exercises daily will ensure that you are not possessed with these feelings. Even deep breathing exercises help one to get rid of despair. Yoga is another method to keep your hormones in stability. Your hormones are the ones which usually decide your mood and can sometimes bring on the feeling of despair. You can practice yoga to keep them stable and hence, remain in a good mood always.
