What if your Boss Seeks Relationship Advice from you?

What if your Boss Seeks Relationship Advice from you?

Bosses are a tricky affair and it gets even trickier when they seek your advice for their own affair. This advice could help you climb the corporate ladder or lead to a total demotion. As these things are more or less dependent on luck, it isn’t easy to survive a situation like this. If you are stuck in a situation like this then, may the almighty help you… however, the almighty isn’t always available so, here are a few tips that will aid you in sailing through this horrid situation –

If possible, avoid it

This is best avoided. You don’t need to get yourself into the murk if you can avoid it altogether. However, this also needs tactics such as handling the situation carefully. The best ways of avoiding this is by not becoming a close confidante of your boss. This way, he or she is never going to seek your advice on their relationship. However, if the damage has been done and you are already too close for comfort, answer something neutral such as I don’t know or I have yet to experience a serious relationship etc. This way if the world turns upside down for your boss, make sure that it hasn’t turned upside down for you.

Keep it Cordial

If you have to give an advice and are left with no choice, don’t go overboard with it. Say something that is practical and obvious and say it casually and cordially. No one is obliged to follow your advice kind of attitude is what you have to showcase while talking to the boss. You may take a chance if your boss is genuinely asking you for advice and is generally a good and fair boss. Otherwise, you better watch yourself before you utter a word.

Say it with a Warning

Help your boss out but also tell him or her at the same time that you have no idea if things will work that way or not. Or you could tell him that it is like this in your opinion but you aren’t sure about it working in the boss’ favour. The trick is to not take responsibility for your advice and to make the boss feel like he or she did it himself. This general rule can be applied to nearly everything and not just relationships. Yet, relationships are the trickiest affair!
