We all know that patience is a big virtue, but it has one problem with it. It can be so easily confused with laziness, so much so that you never actually know whether some person is sitting silent because they are lazy or because they happen to possess great deal of patience. However, there is one more quality that determines whether that person is patient or lazy. That quality is called perseverance, and it is part and parcel of patience. It is the will to carry on for the longest duration of time, sticking to your aim no matter what. Only a patient person can have that quality, whereas lazy people tend to give up on their aims very easily. Meditation requires both these qualities and it also develops both these qualities.
