How to deal with unplanned pregnancy

While pregnancy is the most beautiful experience of any woman’s life, it can be rather troublesome and an anxious period of time for some if it is unplanned. Given below are some measures to help you deal with unplanned pregnancy.

Think it through

Pregnancy and raising a baby is a huge responsibility. Before you decide what to do about your unplanned pregnancy it is very important for you to think of all things associated with pregnancy. Think about how much your life will change if you decide to continue the pregnancy. Will having the baby interfere with any personal or professional goals? If it doesn’t, are you financially stable to raise a baby? And if the baby comes in way of your goals, are you willing to put your personal and professional life on hold for the baby? Also think about how you would feel if you decided not to go ahead with the pregnancy. These are very tough decisions to take and you should think about all aspects before finalizing on the best option for you.

Terminating the pregnancy

If this unplanned pregnancy has come at a bad time in your life and you don’t think you could continue with it, then terminating the pregnancy is the only option for you. Although it may sound as the best option to you, abortion can be very strenuous emotionally. Once you have the realization of a life growing inside of you, it can be very difficult to detach yourself from that living person and even the thought of killing that harmless embryo (which is what abortion is) can be very disturbing. You will have to be very strong to not let the termination of your pregnancy affect you emotionally. It is also important to consider how far along you are in your pregnancy as the chances of complications arising during abortions increase if the pregnancy has advanced. Consult your gynecologist about these options.

Continuing the pregnancy

Even though your pregnancy was unplanned, after thinking about the pros and cons, you might think it better to continue with your pregnancy. Consult your gynecologist immediately and take his/her advice on the things that you need to be careful about. Start eating healthy food and give up drinking and smoking as it can be very harmful for the baby growing inside you and can also lead to developmental problems. Take pre natal classes and keep yourself fit and healthy. However, make sure you are financially stable, as raising a baby will stretch your finances. Having a support system of family and friends will also make it easier for you to continue with your pregnancy. If you don’t have the means or the required support system, then raising a baby on your own can be quite difficult.

Giving the baby for adoption

Some women might not be comfortable with the idea of terminating their pregnancies, but at the same time don’t have the means to raise a baby on their own. In other cases, abortion might not be possible because of medical reasons. In such a situation, there is an option to give your baby for adoption. Carrying a child inside you for nine months and then giving it away to strangers is a very difficult thing to do, but it is still the best option if you know you will not be in a position to take the responsibility of raising a child. Do your research on adoption agencies thoroughly to ensure your baby is in safe and trusted hands. Your local social services department will also be able to help you in this matter. Don’t feel guilty about giving your child away. Think about it this way, you will be providing him/her with a better life than you could manage. You can go for counseling if you feel you need some help in giving up your baby for adoption.

Support groups

Pregnancy in itself is an emotional roller coaster. An unplanned pregnancy, on top of it, can turn your life upside down. It is very important in such a situation that you have somebody with you who can help you in making these decisions. If, however, you are unable to confide in family and friends, there are many support groups where you can seek help. The internet is also a great tool for gathering all information you need. Do some research on your own and educate yourself about the pros and cons of pregnancy and take advice from experts to make the right decision for yourself.
