How to deal with harassment in the workplace

Any form of harassment at the workplace is a grievous issue for the victim as well as the organization. Discrepancies in age, gender, race, physique, authority, etc., are some of the recurrent reasons for harassment in the workplace. Check out the techniques listed below to deal this issue in an efficacious way.

Stay calm and focused

Harassment is quite unendurable for any kind of person, despite his/her age, sex, location, etc. When it happens at the workplace, one cannot pivot his/her attention on work. Harassment may bring physical depression or mental torture. Anyhow, that doesn’t matters. It makes people uncomfortable even in the safest place on earth. Initially, when you notice someone’s harassing behavior, stay calm and focus your attention on work. Coward harassers won’t approach you if you don’t pay attention to their silly behaviors. In case, if you can’t resist yourself in minding their attention, at least try to pretend so. It will help you to discourage harassers during the initial stage itself. Try to avoid meeting them, especially when you are alone in your workplace. However, don’t express your intentional behavior towards them, by any means.

Open up your views

If you have experienced any kind of non-physical harassment at more than 2 or 3 instants, then it’s time to speak to them. Share your problem with your closest colleagues. Seek their help and companionship while you approach the harasser. When you open up your views to the harasser, make sure that your statements are crisp and clear. Make him/her understand that his/her behavior is ruining your work. Let him/her express the reasons for his/her odd behavior towards yourself. If the harasser don’t apologize you instantly, just leave the place. Don’t try to warn him/her about the actions you may intend to take against him/her. Never mock the harasser for his behavior, particularly, in front of other employees and colleagues. It might make them go berserk, which is obviously, going to make the situation further worse.

Address the issue

Most of the people who undergo harassment, hesitate to report their issues to the concerned authorities. Fear of further torture, losing the job, blackmails, safety, etc., are some of the reasons for their hesitation. Of course, there are risks in dealing with harassment. However, you should overcome them to beget a solution for your issue. If you don’t take necessary action, either yourself or someone like you may regret it later. Unsolved cases will lead to further harassing incidents only. Make a casual inquiry to others in order to get information about the concerned authorities. Approach them formally with your close companion and address the issue. Mention the actions you have already taken to deal with the problem. As such incidents will derogate the organization’s reputation, hopefully, you will get help from the concerned authorities.

Go legal or quit

Unfortunately, if you don’t get sufficient response from the your organization’s concerned authorities, literally, you could expect nothing from their side. It’s time to approach the legal authorities about your issue. Indubitably, you will get sufficient help from them. It might affect your organization’s reputation. Never mind; your organization has already insulted you by not responding to your complaints.

Don’t hesitate to quit your current job immediately. There are a lot of exciting opportunities for anyone who step outside their comfort zone. Quitting is not a bad idea; yet, it’s not a solution to deal with harassment in the workplace. In reality, you may face harassment at your new workplaces too.

Forgive and forget

Forgiveness is a divine quality that human beings can possess. It’s quite hard to forgive someone who have troubled you in your life. Yet, it isn’t impossible. Try to forgive those sinners. It makes you feel light and focus on your life. Think positively about your new circumstances and live your life as you wish. As time goes by, you will substantially forget the distressing moments of your life. Never hesitate to share the harassment stories and your experiences with others to make them aware of harassers. Lend your hands to help people who might face similar situations in their life. Together, you will make a big difference in the society and for the society as well. Have a beautiful life ahead!
