How to deal with hives

Hives is an allergic reaction

Hives is an allergic reaction characterized with the development of red swollen patches on skin that create burning, itchy and stinging sensation. These patches erupt within moments of exposure to the allergen that can be anything ranging from the food or medicines one has consumed to such factors like stress or certain infections. The size, duration of occurrence and re occurrence of hives may vary from person to person. Making use of the following remedies helps in dealing with hives-

Application of cold compress:

The best way to reduce the inflammation and swelling of hives is the use of cold compress on the affected areas. Alternatively, one can rub ice on the patches for a few minutes to get the same results. Further, prevent the exposure of heat on the affected area as heat aggravates swelling and burning sensation of hives. Though one must take care that if the allergen causing the hives is cold, then this remedy should be avoided altogether.

 

Oatmeal and cornstarch application:

For acute condition of hives, taking oatmeal baths proves very beneficial in alleviating inflammation caused by hives. Use lukewarm water for such oatmeal baths and allow your body to soak in it for nearly twenty minutes. Commercial oatmeal bath powders are easily available at drugstores. Further, the application of oatmeal mixed with cornstarch also helps in reducing the condition.

Take any over-the-counter anti-histamine:

Intake of any over-the-counter anti-histamine drug like Claritin or Benadryl as soon as the hives erupt helps in controlling the problem of hives from aggravating. Such medicines start showing results within an hour of consumption and effectively reduce the swelling and inflammation of the patches. One may also use anti-histamine creams, like Benadryl on the patches for quick relief from burning and itching of hives.

The eruption of hives is not a serious condition and the use of such remedies may help in dealing with hives. However, in case the condition persists for more than forty-eight hours or continues to aggravate than it is better to consult a doctor.
