How to deal with two year olds

How-to-deal-with-two-year-olds

Dealing with a two year old child can be a daunting task for all parents. At this age, kids can be extremely energetic and want to explore and do things according to their desire. Some rule, commands and restrictions have to be made to keep the kids under control and train them to listen to you.

Abundant patience

The first thing that a person dealing with two years old or any smaller kid is to have loads and loads of patience. An impatient person will find it difficult to deal with two years old as they are difficult to curtail and be kept under control. Most of them can get really messy and noisy at this age, especially when there are other kids who are older or of the same age. Be ready to listen to complaints and temper tantrums and devise ways to keep them under control and prevent fights. Two years old can be amazingly smart and cunning and they can get their way by trying to put the other kid in trouble or falsely trying to put blames on them. Ensure that you are stern, yet approachable in such cases and keep both the parties under control by deflecting their attention to something else.

Set rules and guidelines

At this age kids could become very aggressive and would want to explore everything they see in their immediate surroundings. It is important to set certain guidelines and rules that they can follow so that you do not have to be behind them all the time. To keep these little explorers safe, ensure that you do not have any dangerous things lying around which they can get their hand at. Try to tell them firmly what is safe and what is very dangerous. Instill this in their mind by frequently telling them not to touch a certain thing as it can cause harm. This will help them identify what is good and what is not. It is still your responsibility to keep all dangers at bay as two year old’s can never be trusted. Keep chairs and tables away from places where they can climb and take things out.

Be firm and consistent

Sometimes, you have to be very firm when you say, ‘no’. It is also important to be consistent in your rules and guidelines as two year old’s can get really confused if you allow them to take a certain thing today and tell them that it is dangerous to touch it later on. You must also meet out punishments in case they break the rules and do things that could have put their safety at risk. Isolating them from other kids for a few minutes, letting them know that it was wrong by being stern and not talking to them for few minutes to show that you are really angry can help two year olds realise their mistake. However, all these reactions too must be consistent. You must not allow one kid to touch a certain object, even if he/she is slightly older and prevent a two year old from doing the same thing, saying that it is dangerous. This can lead them to misunderstanding and anger that can cause negative feelings and behaviors that will be difficult to control.

Give them lots of time to have fun

These bundles of energies require lots of playtime and fun to keep themselves busy. Make sure that you arrange for lots of activities. Get in touch with other mothers who have kids of the same age and plan outings, visits to the park, playtime at houses and what not! Give yourself plenty of time to have fun with your two year old. At this age, kids love activities of all kinds, especially outdoor activities where they can run around, jump, shout or explore nature.

Shower love and care

Showering abundant love and care are essential things that can help two year olds develop emotions and feel owned. Plenty of hugs, kisses, play time together, fun time etc. will help them understand the value of interaction and care. Tell them bed time stories, sleep and eat together, listen to them and teach them the importance of communicating the love they feel for others. All these are phases of development that a two year old goes through. Nurturing their every interest and talent and showering them with praise and encouragement are factors that will help in their all round development and attitude towards life.
