Adriana’s only dream was to be doctor and to give free treatment to unfortunate others since she had seen her grandmother dying of cancer. She was in seventh grade but old enough to understand that her parents had financial worries especially when her grandmother was diagnosed with a terrible disease. One night when she came out of her room to take water bottle from the refrigerator she saw her father crying as her mother was trying to console him. Adrian heard him saying that if he had money he could have saved his mother. He hardly had money to pay hospital bills let alone taking her grandmother to a good doctor in the city. That day Adriana made a promise to herself that she would not let anything keep her from achieving her goal. She could have saved her grandmother if she was a doctor, “she said to herself.
Adriana was a good student. It was not a big deal for her to get A on her scorecard. If there was one subject that she hated the most, it was math. She could not stand the long equations that made her sick to her stomach. She was one of the best students in her class. Her teacher always told her the same thing but math had always been responsible for keeping her grades low. Adriana always knew that she would score well in each subject except one. She had always passed her math exam with an average grade. One day her class teacher asked all the students about their dream in life. All the students were excited as their dreams motivated them to follow success in life.
When it was Adrian’s turn, she stood up and said, “Sir, I want to do something for the humanity. I wish to be a doctor so that I could provide free treatment to all those cannot afford to pay for expensive medication.”
Her class teacher who happened to teach her math looked at her for a moment and said, “You cannot get basic education let alone fulfilling your dream without learning math, Adriana. I must tell you the truth about your performance.”
The moment Adriana heard her teacher saying that her dream got shattered. She knew that what her teacher had said that time made a lot of sense. Even she wanted to overcome her fear of math but she always took a step back or kept waiting for the right time.
“Your final exams are just around the corner, Adriana. Make sure you practice mathematical equations and get a grip over them.
Adriana pulled herself together and said, “I will give my best, sir.”
Adriana went back home and took out her math’s textbook. Even her father had told her once that she must not wait for the right time and get down to business without wasting moment.
It was hard, harder than she ever thought but she had no other option. She spent every single minute of her time practicing scary mathematical equations. Even after countless failures, she didn’t give up as she could not afford to take it easy. She took help from her teacher and did not hesitate to seek advice from her classmates who were glad to help a bright student of their class.
The result was quite surprising for all. Adrian passed her seventh grade with an A on her score card and even helped her younger brother in solving math sums that earlier used to give her shivers.
It is true that those who never give up and are always ready to give it all prove themselves worthy of success. No doubt, you may have to work hard or sacrifice your comfort but that’s what takes it to be a winner in life.
