Dealing with head lice can be a traumatizing experience for many women. Once the problem becomes very severe, you would be literally trying to pull your hairs out due to severe itching all throughout the course of the day. Here are some simple remedies that can be employed to deal with head lice infection.
Olive oil massage
One of the simplest and most effective treatments for removing head lice in a few days is the use of olive oil for massaging the head. As this is something that everyone can do at the comforts of their homes, Olive oil remedy is a much preferred treatment method and one which gives fast results as well. Olive oil does not actually kill the lice. It works by preventing the head lice from moving about properly due to the slippery coating of the oil on the head and finally the lice will be suffocated to death. The nits that are stuck on the hair too need to be removed for complete relief. Application of olive oil will loosen the nit glue and remove the nits as well. Apply olive oil generously on the head and hair and leave it for full morning and overnight if possible. Comb using a nit comb every few hours to remove the lice and the nit. Continue for a week for complete relief.
Neem paste treatment
Neem paste is another powerful remedy that will stop the breeding of head lice and prevent severe infection. Take some neem leaves and make it into a fine paste. Apply a thick paste on the scalp and the hair and leave it on until it dries completely. Neem prevents the nit from hatching and stops breeding of head lice. Neem also has the power to imitate insect hormones which again will confuse the head lice and stop them from eating and breeding. The dried neem paste will destroy the head lice and trap the nit as well. Continue application for a week or until all the head lice and nits are removed. You may use neem oil as well for massaging on the head. However, it will not give the benefit of dried neem paste for destroying the lice.
Mayonnaise
For those who do not have neem or olive oil at home, we are sure mayonnaise would be the perfect solution and one that gives the same results as the ones mentioned above. This is surely going to be a messy job though. Apply mayonnaise generously on the scalp and hair and cover with a shower cap. Allow the mayonnaise to remain for an hour or two. Now take a hair dryer and apply heat on the head. The head lice would have got trapped in the gooey formulation of mayonnaise and those which are already not dead would be destroyed with the application of heat as well. Now, you can use a nit comb for removing the dead lice and the nits. To maximise the effect, dip the nit comb in vinegar for diluting the nit glue. Continue application of mayonnaise for a week.
Lemon and butter application
Application of lemon and butter paste too is a simple and quick remedy for head lice. Lemon helps in removing the dirt and dead skin cells from the head as well, and its acidic concentration will also make it difficult for the lice to survive. Lemon is not so effective in treating adult lice which is why butter is mixed with lemon. Butter will smother the adult lice to death and the acidity of lemon will dilute the nit glue as well. Apply lemon and butter paste and leave it on for two hours, covering your head with a shower cap. Use a nit comb for removing the dead lice and nit and wash it off. Do it three times a week for relief.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera is a natural healing agent and disinfectant. For sensitive skinned people, this home remedy is the best for treating head lice without irritating the scalp and also preventing further infection and other skin problems like dandruff as well. Take pure aloe gel and apply a thick paste on the scalp and head. The blend of essential oils and natural oils in aloe vera will kill all kinds of infections in the scalp and its gel like constitution will smother the adult lice and make it difficult for them to move around as well, ultimately killing them. Aloe gel can be applied every day and left on for the full day or overnight for best results. Continue application for at least a week or more depending on the severity of the infection.
