How to deal with low blood pressure

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps. When this pressure is lower than the normal range it is called low blood pressure or hypo-tension. As the blood pressure lowers, the nutrient and oxygen supply to the vital organs will decrease leading to lot of complications. Here are some ways to deal with low blood pressure.

Keep yourself hydrated and increase salt in take

When you get dehydrated, there will be a marked decrease in your blood volume. This in turn will decrease the blood pressure. Therefore, it is very important to keep yourself hydrated especially when you suffer from low blood pressure to prevent it from getting aggravated. Drinks that have high alcoholic and caffeine content tend to cause dilation of the blood vessel which in turn leads to blood pressure fluctuation. Hence, it is important to avoid these drinks. Instead, replace them with water, healthy fruit juices and coconut water.

If you suffer from low blood pressure, increasing your salt intake will be beneficial. Always carry with you some salted crackers and snack on them when ever you feel very tired or dizzy that is when your blood pressure drops.

Healthy diet

Have small meals at least 3 to 4 times a day. Large meal has to be avoided as it often causes an increased blood flow to the digestive system which in turn will lead to decreased blood supply to other organs. Make sure you use normal salt and not low sodium salt for cooking. A diet rich in milk and fruits has found to be beneficial for patients with hypo tension. Increase the intake of fruits with high water content like watermelon. Coconut water has high water content and has all the necessary salts.

Some of the home remedies like drinking raw beetroot juice twice daily is sure to help you. Soak a few almonds overnight and the next morning peel and make a paste of it. Mix it with lukewarm milk and drink. Protein rich and vitamins rich foods are very effective in controlling low blood pressure. Raisins soaked overnight in water is also good and effective. Eat the soaked raisins in the morning one by one on an empty stomach and then drink a glass of water.

Strech your muscles

Moderate exercise like walking or jogging for 30 minutes at least thrice a week can be highly beneficial. Stretching exercises can increase the blood flow which then leads to increase in blood pressure. Flex your knees to bring your pressure back to normal. Warming up and cooling down before and after exercise to prevent fluctuation in blood pressure is very important. Adequate sleep is also of prime importance. Make sure you get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep everyday. While sleeping keep your head elevated for proper blood circulation.
