Bryan knew he had only $20 in his pocket but he still wanted to try his luck. He put his hands in his pocket and took a deep breath. He looked at Ana and said, “It was the best coffee I have ever had in my life,”
“Yes, I always wanted to come here. You have made my day, I must say,” Ana got up and went to the washroom.
A few minutes later, the waiter came along with the bill. Bryan had already calculated the amount. It was exactly $50. The moment he had gone through the menu he wanted to leave at once but he had never seen such a cute smile on his wife’s face. He had a good look at the bill and smiled at the waiter. The waiter was familiar with these expressions. He knew that the customer who do not enough money to pay the bill always keep a smile on their face. It was a smile of misery, which said, “Please save us.” Bryan tried to look confident when he said, “Would you mind if I pay the bill some other day? I have lost my wallet somewhere in restaurant.”
“I have not lost my wallet, I lied. I had only $20 in my pocket,” he said as he kept the money on the table.
The waiter had seen people making a puppy face a million times but he knew exactly what to say in one such moments. He gave him a dirty look and said, “Should I call the cops?”
“No, you can keep my watch. I will come tomorrow with the rest of the amount and take it,” Bryan said.
The waiter did not say anything for a moment. He kept looking at Bryan as if he was trying to see through him.
“All right I will do the dishes if you want me to do that. It is just that it is our first marriage anniversary and we came here to have a cup of coffee and didn’t know that it would cost us $50,” Bryan explained.
The waiter had seen people coming up with all sorts of excuses but had never met someone who was so honest. He did not want to spoil their day. Bryan on the other hand did not want to spoil the mood of his adorable wife who had lost her father a few days back. He did not have a good job but he loved his wife. He would have come here even if he did not have a single penny in his pocket.
A few minutes later Ana came back from the washroom. She had a big smile on her face. The moment Bryan looked at her, his face went red. The waiter gave her a smile and said, “Happy marriage anniversary ma’am. You make a lovely couple.”
“Here is your balance sir,” he said while pushing $20 towards Bryan.
Ana was on the top of the world as Bryan had made her dream come true. She was lost in her own thoughts.
Bryan came the next day and gave $50 to the waiter. The kindness of the waiter had helped him make happy memories of a beautiful evening.
