How to deal with getting older

€˜Aging gracefully€™ is a beautiful idea that everyone wants to implement, but the difficulty of putting it into practice is realized only when they grow older. Maintaining your sense of purpose and your zest for life is the best to way to deal with getting older, which is an irreversible biological process.

Accept the unavoidable and adjust your attitude

The idea of growing old panics most people because they only focus on the losses attached to aging. Even though growing old is inevitable, it is not mandatory that you should ‘feel’ old also.

According to an estimate, 13% of the US population is 65 and older. This is mainly due to the longevity as a result of advancemans in medical fields and lifestyles. Take pleasure in the fact that you have got a chance to live longer and enjoy the pleasures and happiness this modern world offer. It is true that when you grow older, you are faced with a host of disadvantages such as forgetfulness; retirement, dependent living; inability to drive; reduced sexual pleasure and no sexual life at all; health problems, and the list goes on. But take time to pause and think about the advantages that age brings. It may outnumber the disadvantages. You are now free to spend more quality time with your family and grand children; you can still be productive by volunteering work, you are free to spend more time for travelling and hobbies, etc.

You may no longer be able to enjoy many things that you used to at young age. But there are vast array of things that you can do only now. Always wear a positive attitude and take proud of the fact that age brings wisdom. Stop being a complaining pot and grow in your attitude with age. Treat aging like a badge of honor.

Stay on top of your health

Many problems associated with aging mainly stem from ill health and diseases. Fighting aging with nutrition and healthy lifestyle is the best way to deal with growing older. Watch what you eat since it decides your health. Free radicals that damage cells can effectively be handled with a healthy diet. Since your body sucks up less nutrients when you are older, indulge in fruits, vegetables and fiber rich foods more. Stay away from caffeine, refined sugar and fatty things, as they will do no good but more harm. Take vitamin D and calcium supplements.

Indulge in regular exercises and physical activities to stay young. Consult your physician to do the ideal exercises that your body can handle.

Take care of your skin

Skin is the largest organ in human body and announces the signs of aging more apparently. Therefore, take good care of your skin as it tends to sag and get wrinkles and fine lines. Although these signs of aging are irreversible, you can definitely delay their occurrence. After 30 years, our body stops producing natural antioxidants that fight free radicals. Therefore indulge in anti aging foods that are rich in antioxidants to combat damaging activities of free radicals. Looking attractive is great at any age. Choose a suitable skin cream or moisturizer according to your skin type and flaunt fresh skin even at 60. Never allow wrinkled skin to snatch happy life from you. Do not overdo makeup to hide fine lines. Behave maturely and be natural. With happy and positive attitude you can deal with any problem and follow simple skincare regime daily.

Exercise your mind

Always keep your mind and brain engaged to avoid cognitive decline. Regular mental workout is as important as physical workout. Since memory loss and aging are closely connected, be alert not to be a subject of it. Remember that memory loss is not inevitable with aging. Human brain is competent to generate new brain cells at any age. Play brain games such as Sudoku, crosswords, other word games, cards, chess, bridge etc., to keep your brain active. Spend time in reading good and challenging books. Learning has no age boundaries.Try to learn a musical instrument, a foreign language, or a new game. It only requires a willing heart.

Stay connected

Socialization is the best way to live connected. Find time to spend with your friends and people whom you love. At any age, social networks and friends are mentally stimulating and have the ability to prevent brain from neuro degeneration. Go for daily walking with your neighbor and have food with you friends occasionally. Use social networking sites, telephone or mails to stay connected with friends who are not living nearby. Try to make new friends and ensure that your friends circle include people of younger age also. Friends invigorate happiness in us which in turn enhances our immune system and reduces stress.
