How to deal with eczema

Askin problem which is characterized by the presence of dry, itchy and scaly skin and which is commonly seen in children is eczema, a kind of dermatitis. In severe cases, there may be bleeding in the skin lesions along with severe itching. It is usually caused due to disturbance in the immune system. The following solutions might be helpful in dealing with this skin condition but do discuss the same with your clinician before trying them:

Identify the triggers to prevent further allergic reactions and secondary infections

Some substances like soap, wool, certain foods (sea-food, soy) chemicals detergents and other lotions are known to cause allergic reactions, so identify those which could have triggered this allergic reaction. This measure can be very helpful in battling the disease. Stress may often worsen the condition due to its effect on the immune system. Confirm if any of your family members is allergic to such substances, as you may have a history of such allergies. If it is so, then you can limit your exposure to such substances.

Get yourself diagnosed for the specific type of eczema

Some types of dermatitis are more chronic than others like Neurodermatitis, in which itching increases in intensity resulting in a leathery texture on the skin. Nummular dermatitis, also a chronic form of dermatitis can be identified by patches of irritated skin. For such types, it is very important that you seek immediate medical help as, earlier the treatment is given, the better. Atopic dermatitis is not due to allergens. Stress could play a role in causing Seborrheic dermatitis and generally people with neurological problems, oily skin are prone to this type of eczema. So it is better to consult a dermatologist at the earliest to diagnose the specific eczema and follow the treatment options so as to prevent the risk of secondary infections.

Use all the medications given for relief

Corticosteroids, antihistamines for allergy, antibiotics (for bleeding and cuts due to scratching leading to bacterial infection) and other topical creams are usually given as first line of treatment. Do follow all the instructions given regarding the area of application and duration of treatment. Topical creams can be best applied soon after a bath when the skin is still moist for better absorption as they provide relief from itchiness. Some home remedies, herbal treatments like using Calendula, Lavender can give relief in some cases and may not be effective in others but a suggestion from a specialist is required even before trying out some options. Cold compress (to reduce itchiness), phototherapy can be tried on the affected area for some relief. If all these treatments don’t seem to work, then drugs like Cyclosporine have to be used to modulate the immune response but they do carry some side-effects when used. There are still some latest drugs (drugs belonging to the class of Calcineurin inhibitors), which can be used and are approved by the FDA with fewer or no side-effects for eczema. Sedative- antihistamines are usually prescribed in cases of severe itchiness.

Control your urge to scratch when itchiness occurs

Avoid scratchingin the affected area as it worsens and can cause breakage of skin and bleeding, making the area prone to bacterial attack. In case, sores or fissures are formed due to scratching, use oral and topical antibiotic creams (to prevent more infections) as suggested by the doctor. As a precaution, avoid allowing your skin to become dry at any time as this causes more itchiness, so use lotions which are alcohol, harmful chemicals-free as they further irritate the skin and have plenty of water to prevent dehydration and to retain moisture.

Other precautions to be taken to deal with the condition

This skin condition is more prevalent in children, so to better manage the condition, use medicated soaps, cotton clothes, socks for them. Ensure that rooms are clean, free from mites and other pests, maintain optimum temperature inside the house. Multivitamin supplements can be taken as they aid in healing and topical application of vitamin E is also suggested, as it is good for the skin. Whenever slight itching occurs in the affected area, mild skin lotions like Calydryl (Calamine lotion) can be used for soothing the skin.

Avoid scrubbing the skin, use mild medicated soaps and lukewarm water (avoid hot water and prolonged exposure to water during bathing) for washing the affected area. Dry the skin well and apply mild lotion to retain moisture.

It is always essential to get an accurate diagnosis from a specialist and further continue the treatment options till one overcomes it completely. Early treatment helps to minimize the risk of secondary infections further worsening the existing condition.
