How to deal with disappointment

Disappointment is a much known word and a commonly experienced feeling. This feeling can present itself in various intensities. Sometimes it is very mild, lasts for a very short span of time and without leaving much impact on a person vanishes in thin air. Sometimes it can be so huge that you need to take the help of various measures to deal with it and reduce its negative impact on your life.

Get a reality check and practice acceptance

The worst thing that you can do to come out of disappointment is remaining in a denial mode. Yes, it might hurt to accept the fact or the failure. But, accepting the truth would help you deal with the situation better and faster. Feel the pain and the hurt caused by the disappointing event of your life. Do not try to force yourself to recover from the disappointment in an unusual fast speed. Let time do its own work and heal you at its own pace. Along with time, give yourself space too so that you know how to deal with your feelings and emotions appropriately. Thereafter, get a reality check. Know the situation you are standing in without any confusion or illusion. Reality check would give you clarity of mind and thought which is extremely important. Also, accept the fact that not everything in life would go as per your plan, wish, or thought. You must realize that you cannot control everything in your life.

Learn from your defeat

It is said that every event and experience in our life can teach us something. So, instead of trying to ignore or forget the disappointing event as a sour experience, try to learn from it. Try to understand what caused the event to go awry or what was the reason of the defeat. By analyzing the matter you would understand and learn what mistake you made and how to avoid it in future. Disappointment can be good or bad for you. All depends on how you look at it. So, use the disappointment to make you more wise and defeat-proof.

Change your attitude towards life and disappointments

To deal with disappointment you must change your outlook towards life. A positive attitude towards life can make a lot of difference and is thus essential to deal with disappointment. So, encourage positivity in yourself. Do not let the disappointment stop you from progressing, instill doubts about yourself in your mind, or give birth to negativity in you. Take the disappointment as an opportunity to grow and be better. Move forward and don’t let one single defeat stop you from moving ahead towards success. Do not judge yourself or your abilities based on one single failed event. Do not start considering yourself as a failure. Rather, reevaluate yourself, your life, and your priorities and bring in the necessary changes in you. Adopt patience as changes would not happen in a snap. You will require to put in time and effort in them. Refrain from perfectionism and limit your expectations. Develop confidence and remove all traces of lack of confidence or overconfidence. Then try to find the solution for the problem or your success for whatever caused disappointment in you. Also, always be ready with a backup plan when you attempt doing anything in life. Always aim to achieve your dreams and desires instead of targeting your decided goals. At the same time, do not be too attached with the outcome of any thing that you put your effort in. Concentrate on the journey to your goals and enjoy facing the challenges that come during that journey.

Encourage yourself

To overcome disappointment, you must know how to encourage yourself. Do whatever makes you feel motivated and lifts up your spirit. Participate in activities that you enjoy, play sports, spend time with friends and family, do something constructive, etc. Spend time with positive people who help you feel motivated and instill a sense of worthiness in you. Speak to people who have been through similar situations or experiences and seek their guidance. Talking to such people would also help you realize that disappointments occur to all and you are not the only one and would automatically reduce your pain. Spend time alone to be with yourself that you can use to think positive, regaining your confidence, and encouraging yourself. Learn to appreciate what you have. Always remember that disappointment is a part of life. It occurs to every person. So, instead of becoming afraid of it, gain courage and confidence to deal with it.

Keep your hope alive

The most vital thing is to keep your hope alive. Do not give up at any cost. Things might seem horrible and situations might look disastrous when you are disappointed. But, in reality it might not be as bad as it looks to you. So, take a fresh look at the entire situation once you have calmed down. If things do not look quite promising to you even when you look at the matter after getting over the initial or raw disappointment, you must remember that this is not the end. There is nothing in this world that does not provide you with another chance to fight and win. So, keep your hopes alive and move forward with more courage, determination, and confidence.
