That day the topic of the discussion was based on people who pretend to be needy and make money. All the students agree with the idea that there are people who not only make money but also act smart since they do not want to work hard. When Gary and Thomas are on their way back home, they were talking about the same topic.
The moment they reached near railway station, they saw a shabby looking man begging everyone to give him something to eat. The platform was jam packed with passengers of different age group but no one gave him anything. They would look at him with kindness in their eyes but behaved as if he didn’t exist. A little girl took out an apple from her bag but her father gave her a nod to keep it inside the bag. The beggar was looking pale and walking lame.
A few minutes later, he came towards Garry. He had a foul smell on his body as if he had not taken a bath for months. He had worn cloths that hardly covered his body. He came a step close, looked towards Garry again and said, “Please give me some money. I have not eaten anything for last two days and now I am starving.”
Garry gave him a dirty look but did not say anything.
“Please give me something to eat or some money so that I can grab a bite,” he said. His face was full of wrinkles and his long deadlocks made him look horrible. Thomas noticed that he was walking bare feet. “How could he bear the pain? The temperature has gone really down. Doesn’t he feel cold?” he thought as he looked around him.
Thomas put his hands in his pocket and took out a small amount of money. When he gave the money to the homeless person, he didn’t even look at him and walked away. Garry was observing everything. He shrugged his shoulders and asked, “Why did you give him the money? People like you encourage them. You should have scolded him instead. Such people make a lot of money, as it is their profession. It is the easiest way to make money. All you need to do is to put on a puppy face and blackmail people emotionally.”
Thomas looked at him and said, “Didn’t you see he was in a bad condition. The money I gave him was a very small amount for me but for him it meant food for a day.”
Gary was not ready to give up. He said, “What if he didn’t need the money?”
“And what if he needed the money? He had not eaten anything for two days. The money I gave him could save his life and keep him alive for another day,” Thomas said and started walking towards the train.
They had hardly gone a few steps away when they saw the poor person eating bread, which he had bought with the money Thomas gave him. He was so hungry that he was swallowing the big bites of the bread without chewing them.
Sometimes we should just do what our heart tells us, as we need to be a little considerate for a few things. Don’t hold yourself back when your heart tells you to move forward and help someone.
