Set your own pace - Live A Great Life Podcast by Dr Prem – Chapter. 55

Here is a quote –  Slow and steady wins the race.

—Aesop

You cannot expect to accomplish your goals in a moment; expecting premature results is an impractical and unrealistic approach towards achieving your goal. Targets have to be set with a realistic timeframe towards accomplishing it; therefore, be judicious with your time allotment.

To set your pace, determine what you are comfortable with. Hurrying to achieve your goals would require a Herculean effort on your part, which may force you to test your limits too often. It is viable once or twice, but you cannot supersede your abilities every time.

Exceeding your limits can leave you frustrated, exhausted, or uninterested even in your daily chores, and take a toll on your confidence as well. Therefore, refrain from jumping on to the next step of your goal without completing the first one. It is advisable to chunk your goals into daily, weekly, monthly goals, and so on.

Try to maintain your own pace

The inconsistency of speed often leads to delays and piling up of tasks. Not exhausting yourself – either physically or mentally – is also of utmost significance. Therefore, set goals and achieve them at your own pace and schedule.

Keep one thing in mind – you have to accomplish your goals; no one else will do that for you. Additionally, no one else knows your abilities and shortcomings better than you do. Hence, do not allow someone else to set the pace for you. You have to believe that you will accomplish your goal, provided you stand by your action plan and continue at the optimum pace. You can experiment with your pace and adhere to the one that best suits you and your time.

When setting your pace, you should reserve ample time for yourself. You need to spend some quality time with your family members and friends which will rejuvenate you. Therefore, your pace setting should accommodate the ‘me’ and ‘we’ time.

Do not put off what you can do today

I remember a story that my grandmother used to tell me when I was a child. Once, a military officer ordered his subordinate to plant a slow-growing tree in his garden. The subordinate asked, ‘Sir, I fail to understand why you are planting a tree that would take half a century to deliver fruits?’ The official promptly replied, ‘If that is so, then plant the tree without much delay.’

Accomplishing your tasks at right earnest provides a kind of momentum to an individual, which, if maintained, can open the gates of success in no time. Take an avalanche for instance. It always starts with tiny pebbles and snowflakes. When the entire pent-up potential energy is released, the avalanche gains momentum, speed, and strength, which can destroy even the mightiest of obstructions.

This is what momentum can do to you. It unleashes your latent energy and speeds up your tasks. If you shift completing your task to a later time, it will rob you of momentum, regaining which may then become an uphill task.
