How to deal with dizziness

 

Dizziness is a common symptom associated with many conditions. Though not a serious condition as such, dizziness that is associated with many serious disorders can be very scary and require immediate medical attention. For dizziness that crops up due to exhaustion, thirst, lack of food, extreme heat, etc., all you need to be aware of is to know how to deal with it.

Sit down and relax

The first thing you must do when dizziness strikes you is to sit down wherever you are. This will prevent you from falling down and getting hurt, complicating matters. Sit comfortably or lie down if possible. Ask for help if you feel that you are losing balance fast. Once you are in a position that prevents you from falling down, you can relax and take it easy. Inhale deeply so that the blood flow to the brain can be increased. If you have someone near you, you may ask for an ice pack. Place the icepack on your neck for about 10 minutes after lying on your stomach. Ask someone to do this while you lie down comfortably on the bed. This will help you break free from the nausea, vomiting, light-headedness and dizziness greatly. Ice pack will cool your head and offer relief from the symptoms.

Drink water

One of the first things that you must do after sitting or lying down is to drink plenty of water. Most cases of dizziness occur when the body is dehydrated or overheated. Drinking water will help in removing these two problems immediately and most often stops your dizziness almost completely. Drink at least 2 glasses of water immediately after you relax and sit comfortably. The cooling sensation will ease your frayed nerves and tiredness as well. After this, you can lie down and relax for a few minutes before trying to get up. Concentrate on deep breathing exercises and leave your mind blank while you relax. There are several reasons that you could have felt dizzy. Low blood pressure, stress, and panic attacks too can lead to similar symptoms and leaving your mind blank will help get away from the immediate stress and anxiety that may have been the cause.

Herbal solutions

There are many simple herbal solutions that can help in treating dizziness. Herbal remedies help by improving the blood circulation to the brain and removing any instances of dizziness caused by dehydration. They also cool the body and remove the heat which too might have caused the dizziness. The best herb that can be used for dizziness is ginger. A small piece of ginger can be chewed which will help in increasing blood circulation. You can also use peppermint or ginkgo biloba which too will help in cooling the body and increasing the circulation to the brain. You may ask for a cup of chamomile tea if available to calm your spirits as well.

Acupressure

If you are prone to frequent bouts of dizziness, it helps to know the pressure points that can be stimulated in order to attain instant relief. As per the laws of acupressure, certain pressure points in your body can stimulate the circulation of blood to the brain. Applying pressure on these points will help in relieving the dizziness in a few minutes. Once you have come out of your initial light-headedness, you can sit up and keep your knees bent. Make sure that you have a support at the back like a wall or a chair back so that you do not fall back in case you are still dizzy. Identify the shin bones which are right below your knee and press on this area with your fingers. This will improve blood circulation to your brain and you will immediately feel energized and free from the symptoms.

When to take things seriously

If your dizziness is associated with any serious medical condition that you may have or if your symptoms do not relieve even after basic preventive methods and you feel worse every minute, it is time to check into a hospital. This is also necessary if you have been feeling dizzy many times lately. It could be due to an underlying medical condition waiting to be discovered or something else that needs to be assessed and treated by a specialist. Your doctor might do a preliminary check up to rule out anemia, ear infections, sinus problems, and fever that could be eating into your energy levels. In serious cases, diagnostic tests too could be suggested in order to rule out complications.
